Winnebago Two-Spirit will be hosting “Red and Wild,” the first drag show to ever occur on Winnebago tribal lands. In the Ho-Chunk language, the word for strawberry is hascek, which literally translates to “first fruit.” After a long hard winter, strawberries are the first to bloom and bear fresh fruit for harvest. For this reason, many tribes see strawberries as a symbol of hope and rebirth. In the wake of Nebraska’s anti-trans and anti-drag show legislation, it is a powerful act of Tribal Sovereignty to celebrate Two-Spirit people who have always been here. These colonial forces once again seek to discriminate against Indigenous gender identities. Just like strawberries, Two-Spirit/LGBTQ+ people are bright, bold, and sweet: a symbol of hope in their sacred existence.
Showtime is 7:00 pm at the Land of Wellness.
